Esther Gonzalez, Trinity Rodman and KC Current headline NWSL season
The second half of the NWSL season begins as Esther Gonzalez leads the Golden Boot race, Trinity Rodman returns, and KC Current dominate standings.
The NWSL season rolls on this weekend, with the first-place Kansas City Current among the teams playing Friday night.
The major news around the league heading into the weekend’s games centers on the North Carolina Courage, who suddenly and with little explanation dismissed head coach Sean Nahas Wednesday night. Friday’s game against a Houston Dash team desperately needing a win to reignite their season was already a big one for two teams looking to get into the playoff picture, but a baffling Thursday press conference about the change means the spotlight is now on the Courage.
In the nightcap, the last-place Utah Royals host the mighty Current. Utah picked up a good result last week, getting a spectacular early goal from Mina Tanaka and hanging on for a 1-1 road draw with the Orlando Pride. However, there’s no bigger test in the NWSL these days than league-leading Kansas City, which won a seventh straight game last week in downing Racing Louisville 2-0.
