Tina Fey’s SNL UK Monologue Kicked Off a Hilarious Night

This past weekend was a momentous one in TV history. For the first time ever SNL was live from London, as Saturday Night Live UK kicked off with… an American host. Why? That questions was very much at the forefront Tina Fey’s monologue as the famous series alum served as the spinoff’s inaugural host. But she didn’t have to answer that question by herself. Guest stars from “the Commonwealth” helped educate both her and the audience about what they could expect from Saturday Night Live UK.

Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan, beloved Canadian Michael Cera, and talk show host Graham Norton all popped up to ask questions and have some fun with Fey as she worked her way through a classic SNL style monologue. Coughlan was there to ask the big question: why was an American hosting the first UK episode? The answer was both funny and informative for any American fans tuning in to see how their country’s latest export would translate across the Atlantic.

Cera’s surprise appearance was just as helpful. He explained to Fey why it was appropriate for a Canadian to appear on SNL UK. He also helped highlight there is one f***ing big difference between the two shows.

Finally, Norton did what he does best in the studio his own talk show calls home. He got onstage and helped make an American star more likable to a United Kingdom audience. Norton did that by questioning Fey about her own history with UK comedy. That led to her running through a gauntlet of great impressions based on famous British shows.

Was it the best monologue in SNL (from any country) in the show’s history? No. Was it a mix of genuinely funny bits and missed gags? Yes. And in that way, even if viewers across the Atlantic don’t know it just yet, it was the most fitting start to SNL UK possible.
