Chuck Redd was slated to host a Christmas Eve jazz concert at the Kennedy Center as has been tradition for two decades.
The artist cancelled the show however after President Donald Trump’s appointed board had his name added to the building. It now reads The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.
And that was too much for Redd.
“When I saw the name change on the Kennedy Center website and then hours later on the building, I chose to cancel our concert,” Redd told The Associated Press. “
Redd has hosted the event since 2006. His decision created quite the social media stir with many in the MAGA world attacking him.
“@ChuckRedJazz is an ass,” on person wrote on X. “I hope he is never invited back. You are a performer not a political entity. So you screw over an audience and fellow performers because of your own TDS? You don’t deserve that honor. If not for Trump you may have been performing in a crumbling shell. Screw you, you petulant jerk.”
“Crybaby @ChuckReddJazz decided to cancel Christmas Eve concert for thousands who had pre-purchased tickets,” another wrote on X. “All because of his own TDS, and Trump hurt his feelings. I’ve never heard of this turd, but I hope that his handful of fans drop him.”
“What a piece of garbage,” another person wrote on X. “Cancelling a concert because of TDS instead of allowing people to celebrate the holidays and enjoy a performance. I hope everyone that attends any future concerts of yours — chooses (to) BOYCOTT YOU.”
“Someone should buy the Blues Alley and fire Chuck Redd before the New Years concert,” another person wrote.
And those were some of the nicer criticisms of the performer.
There was plenty of support for Redd on X, too.
“Proudly supporting @ChuckReddJazz in his group’s decision not to perform at the now partisan and renamed — without mandated congressional approval — Kennedy Center National Memorial,” Steven Asbury wrote. “These artists depend on these events to put food on the table but taking a stand for democracy.”
“There are Americans with an ounce of integrity out there,” Jim Riordan wrote. “Bravo Chuck Redd!”
