When Meghan Markle first joined the royal family, Prince William found her “quite refreshing,” according to an expert.
However, things quickly fell apart, and by 2020, Harry and Meghan had left the royal family. There’s been a lot of speculation about what caused the split, with former royal butler Grant Harrold now sharing his thoughts.
Speaking on behalf of OLBG, Harrold said, “We saw William, Kate, Harry, and Meghan do so many things together initially, but the turning point was a few months before the announcement that they were stepping away from royal duties.
“They were doing events in the summer prior to that, so something must have happened in between.”
When Harry and Meghan left the royal family, they released a statement that read, “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution.”
It continued, “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty the Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.”
It’s believed the statement left the royal family blindsided, with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly not consulting Queen Elizabeth or the then-Prince Charles before releasing it.
Harry is said to now regret how he announced his departure from the royal family.
A source previously told The Telegraph, “I don’t think he fully appreciated the impact the statement would have in terms of them not consulting the Queen. He regrets that.”
Harry and Meghan’s bombshell statement led the Queen to issue her own comment, confirming the couple were no longer “full-time working members of the royal family.”
In the statement, she said she would have “preferred” the Sussexes to stay, but admitted she understood the decision and supported their “wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.”
The Queen added, “Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives,” before concluding, “These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days.”
