Long term investing is the way to go, but that doesn’t mean you should hold every stock forever. We don’t wish catastrophic capital loss on anyone. Imagine if you held Ubisoft Entertainment SA (EPA:UBI) for half a decade as the share price tanked 87%. And it’s not just long term holders hurting, because the stock is down 42% in the last year. Furthermore, it’s down 14% in about a quarter. That’s not much fun for holders. While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn’t as important as health and happiness.

Since Ubisoft Entertainment has shed €45m from its value in the past 7 days, let’s see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business’ economics.

Trump has pledged to “unleash” American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit.

Given that Ubisoft Entertainment didn’t make a profit in the last twelve months, we’ll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. When a company doesn’t make profits, we’d generally hope to see good revenue growth. That’s because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

Over five years, Ubisoft Entertainment grew its revenue at 2.4% per year. That’s far from impressive given all the money it is losing. Nonetheless, it’s fair to say the rapidly declining share price (down 13%, compound, over five years) suggests the market is very disappointed with this level of growth. We’d be pretty cautious about this one, although the sell-off may be too severe. We’d recommend focussing any further research on the likelihood of profitability in the foreseeable future, given the muted revenue growth.

It’s probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. It’s always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. A Different Perspective

Ubisoft Entertainment shareholders are down 42% for the year, but the market itself is up 2.9%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year’s performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 13% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that Ubisoft Entertainment is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about…

Of course, you might find a fantastic investment by looking elsewhere. So take a peek at this free list of companies we expect will grow earnings.
