Utah Royals Stay Hot with 2-0 Home Win Over Houston Dash

SANDY, Utah (Wednesday, May 6, 2026) – Utah Royals (5-2-1, 16 points, 2nd NWSL) earned a 2-0 home victory over Houston Dash (3-3-1, 10 points, 7th NWSL) at America First Field on Wednesday night, securing the club’s fourth consecutive shutout and fifth straight victory dating back to the end of the original 2018-19 era. In front of an announced crowd of 6,789, Utah native Courtney Brown scored her first goal for the Royals in front of her hometown fans, while Japanese midfielder Mina Tanaka recorded her first multi-assist match of her NWSL career in the victory.

Utah Royals Head Coach Jimmy Coenraets kept the team’s formation unchanged but made two personnel changes to the starting XI following Utah’s two-match road stretch. Japanese defender Miyabi earned the start at left back, while Cece Delzer was introduced up top to lead the attack. The adjustments came after the Royals secured back-to-back road victories, consecutive clean sheets, and all six available points against Seattle Reign FC and Angel City FC, most recently earning a 1-0 victory over Angel City FC in Los Angeles last weekend.

Utah Royals FC entered Wednesday night with several notable storylines, as defender Kate Del Fava extended her streak of starting every match for Utah since the club’s return to NWSL play in 2024. Forward Delzer faced her former club after beginning her NWSL career with the Houston Dash in 2019 before later being selected by Racing Louisville FC in the 2020 Expansion Draft. Goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn also earned her second consecutive start after recording her first clean sheet of the 2026 campaign in Utah’s 1-0 victory over Angel City FC last weekend, the Royals’ first-ever win in Los Angeles.

The Royals opened the match aggressively, immediately pushing numbers forward in search of an early breakthrough. In the sixth minute, Danish defender Janni Thomsen delivered a dangerous ball into the box that was partially cleared by the Houston back line outside the 18-yard box. Captain Paige Cronin met the loose ball first time, but her effort sailed over the crossbar to keep the match scoreless.

Utah continued to apply pressure in the attacking third, creating another dangerous opportunity in the 10th minute. Japanese midfielder Tanaka received the ball just outside the box, quickly turned past her defender, and unleashed a powerful strike that forced the Houston goalkeeper to push the effort over the bar for a corner kick.

Entering the match, Utah had scored all five of its first-half goals this season on the road, while Houston had recorded just three first-half goals overall during the 2026 campaign. The Royals nearly added another in the 37th minute when Tanaka and Delzer combined for a quick give-and-go sequence near the top of the box, but Tanaka’s shot was blocked before reaching goal.

One minute later, Utah finally found the breakthrough. In the 38th minute, Thomsen intercepted a Houston pass and quickly found Tanaka in the middle of the pitch. Tanaka then delivered a perfectly weighted through ball into the path of Cloé Lacasse, who timed her run perfectly before calmly slotting her finish past the Houston goalkeeper to give Utah a 1-0 advantage. The finish marked Lacasse’s third consecutive match with a goal and Utah’s first home goal scored in the opening half this season.

The scoring streak also moved Lacasse one step closer to the club record for goals scored in four consecutive matches, a mark previously held by Christen Press and Amy Rodriguez during the club’s original 2018-19 era. Additionally, both Cronin and Brecken Mozingo entered the match having scored in three consecutive games during the current iteration of the club.

Utah carried its 1-0 lead into halftime, improving to 3-1-0 this season when leading at the break.

Heading into the second half, Utah Royals continued to push forward in search of a second goal to extend its advantage. In the 52nd minute, the Royals earned a corner kick that was initially cleared outside the box before Japanese defender Miyabi struck the loose ball first time. Her powerful effort rattled the top-right corner of the goal and bounced off the line, narrowly missing what would have been her first goal for the club and keeping the score at 1-0.

As the match progressed, Utah’s defense continued its historic performance. Entering the contest, a victory would tie the best winning streak in club history, originally set across the 2018 and 2019 seasons when the club won its final three matches of 2018 before opening 2019 with two consecutive victories.

The Royals continued to frustrate Houston throughout the second half, and in the 76th minute Utah officially set a new club record for the longest shutout streak in franchise history at 364 consecutive minutes without conceding, surpassing the previous mark of 363 minutes established during the 2019 campaign.

Houston nearly found a late breakthrough in the 85th minute, but defender Kate Del Fava came up with a crucial goal saving clearance to preserve Utah’s one-goal advantage and keep the clean sheet intact.

Utah sealed the victory three minutes later. In the 88th minute, midfielder Tanaka delivered a perfectly timed pass into the path of Utah native Courtney Brown, who made a dangerous run into the box before striking her finish first time past the Houston goalkeeper and into the right side of the net to give Utah a 2-0 lead. The goal marked Brown’s first for Utah Royals in front of her hometown fans, while Tanaka recorded her second assist of the night and the first multi-assist match of her NWSL career.

The victory secured Utah’s fifth consecutive win earning the longest winning streak in club history and extending the club’s impressive run of form heading into Sunday’s road match against Bay FC.
