Priyanka Chopra appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Friday, where she shared her excitement about returning to Indian cinema with the upcoming film Varanasi. The film, directed by SS Rajamouli and starring Mahesh Babu, marks Chopra’s first Indian movie in six to seven years. During the show, Chopra described the experience as an adventure and praised Rajamouli’s direction, underscoring the significance of the project for her career.
Chopra emphasised the importance of working with Rajamouli, whom she referred to as “one of India’s talented directors.â€
Speaking to Fallon, Chopra said, “I haven’t done an Indian movie in almost like six or seven years. This movie is called Varanasi, and it is directed by SS Rajamouli, who is one of India’s most amazingly talented directors. It is going to be an adventure, and I am very excited about it. April 27!”
She then revealed the scale of the shoot. “Oh my god! We have been filming for 14 months, and we are still filming for another six.” Fallon was surprised to know about the filming duration of the film.
The film is said to be mounted on a massive scale and is being shot in IMAX format. Jimmy Fallon remarked, “The rumours are it’s an epic. It is IMAX!” To which Priyanka confirmed, “Yes, we have shot it in IMAX format, so it is going to be for IMAX theatres. It is going to be great.”
Varanasi was previously announced by Rajamouli, who also introduced Mahesh Babu’s character, Rudhra, depicted riding an ox and holding a trishul.
Chopra will play Mandakini in the film, while Mahesh Babu leads as Rudhra. The movie is expected to be released in April 2027.
Chopra has been away from Indian films for several years, focusing on projects in Hollywood and international productions.
The global icon is currently seen in The Bluff, released on Prime Video on February 25. Set in the Cayman Islands and directed by Frank E. Flowers, The Bluff features Chopra in a physically demanding role alongside Karl Urban.
