BRATTLEBORO — Winners of this year’s Vermont Pastel Society (VPS) juried member show will be honored at an awards reception at Vermont Artisan Designs from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, during Gallery Walk in Brattleboro. The show continues through Nov. 22.
After an initial jurying process led by Margaret Dyer and Dawn Emerson determined the 23 pastels in this year’s show, nationally recognized pastelist Liz Haywood-Sullivan selected the winners.
Best in Show went to Katrina Thorstensen’s Coastal Overlook, “wonderfully evocative of a foggy coastline,” according to the judge.
Second place went to Chris Reid’s On the Rocks III, “a lovely observation of color on snow with confident mark making.”
Third place went to Marianne Nealy’s The Slang, N. Ferrisburg. “Greens are hard to do, but this artist handles them well by utilizing bits of warm color. The bold energetic strokes and competent value work gives this painting great dimensionality,” according to the judge.
Big Red by Laura Winn Kane is a “masterful rendering of metal and glass,” said the judge in giving this painting fourth place.
Slices of Sunshine by Jocelyn Randles took fifth place. According to the judge, Randles made “good use of underpainting to support the top layers of pastel. It also made nice use of aerial perspective principles to create believable atmosphere and distance.”
A People’s Choice award will be announced at the Nov. 7 Gallery Walk.
