Country legend Vince Gill has just given fans a little more of a great thing.
30 years ago, the 22-time Grammy winner gave the world the gift of “Go Rest High On That Mountain,” a gorgeous song he wrote in memory of his late brother, Bob. The track won both CMA and Grammy awards and climbed all the way up to No. 14 on the charts.
Everyone loved the song, but Gill felt it was unfinished in some way. While he started writing the original tune back in 1989, after the death of country great Keith Whitley, Gill kept tinkering with it. However, he had other songs to write and a life to live, and set aside finishing the song until after his brother Bob’s death in 1993, which he eventually released to great acclaim.
Despite the track’s success, Gill still wasn’t quite happy with it. “In all these years of singing that song, truthfully it felt just the slightest bit incomplete to me, I always thought it needed to tie itself up in some way,” he said, according to The Boot.
He kept working on the track, eventually adding a powerful new verse for those grieving a loved one. The new verse includes the lines: “You’re safely home in the arms of Jesus / Eternal life, my brother’s found / The day will come I know I’ll see him / In that sacred place, on that holy ground.”
He debuted the song’s new verse during a performance at the Ryman in 2019. However, he never recorded the new verse, only sharing it with fans in live performances.
Now, to mark the song’s 30th anniversary, he has released an extended version of “Go Rest High On That Mountain” with the addition of the third verse, finally giving fans more of the classic song.
