‘Vomiting’ warning issued over horror Dolly film that’s been dubbed ‘nightmare fuel’

Horror movie fans are bracing themselves to be feeling more than a little queasy as disturbing new thriller Dolly arrives in cinemas this weekend. Critical reactions are flooding in and it appears fright fanatics are in for a treat. The rest of us might be advised to watch through our fingers.

The teaser reveals a pair wandering through woodland before suffering a brutal assault from a mysterious assailant costumed as a sinister doll. The filmmakers have billed it as “nightmare fuel” and “the scariest movie yet in the great chainsaw massacre tradition”.

The plot outline states: “A young woman, Macy, fights for survival after being abducted by a deranged, monster-like figure who wants to raise her as their child.”

A reviewer from Film Ireland has issued a sickness alert, warning: “Dolly is the kind of midnight movie that makes you belly-laugh at least once… right before making you regret having a stomach.”

The Rod Blackhurst production is adapted from his 2022 short film, Babygirl, with Bradon Weavil serving as co-writer. American Pie’s Stifler, played by Seann William Scott, features in the terrifying picture. Additional cast includes Fabianne Therese as the young woman Macy, Russ Tiller as Billy and Kate Cobb as Rachel.

The film made its global debut at the Fantastic Fest last September and early audiences seem absolutely captivated. It’s achieved a 70% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 50 critical assessments.

One critique states: “Dolly is a garishly good little slasher that leans into nostalgia and its inspiration just enough, without getting lost.” One critic noted: “You’ll gasp, you’ll laugh, you’ll scream in disgusted delight at every nasty revelation in Dolly.” Another penned: “Dolly amps up the guts and gore of yesteryear to make a throwback isolationist horror sure to delight the bloodthirsty.”

Fans are vomitting after watching it

Fans are buzzing with anticipation for Dolly, taking to Reddit to voice their thoughts. One user shared: “I’m very much looking forward to it. I like that the trailer doesn’t give away a lot in terms of the plot, so that’s hooked me in.”

Another expressed: “The director did an ama here a whilst back that was pretty interesting. I’m looking forward to seeing it.” A third wrote: “hopefully this one lives up to the hype.”

Director Richard teased: “Dolly is an elegant and twisted fairy tale born out of a deep love of gritty genre films and wanting to see something bonkers that a 13 year old me would pine to rent (somehow) from the local video store (that was also the jewellery and appliance repair store) in rural upstate New York.

“I knew this film needed to have a strange, deranged beating heart not just for our protagonist, Macy, but the titular Dolly, who I hope is a shockingly complex and ultimately oddly sympathetic figure – and a character who will bring much madness to audiences for years to come.”

“Because as outsiders, this film is a renewed investment in our ethos as filmmakers, our proud tribe of misfits, and our families especially our children, who I hope never encounter a life-sized, blood-soaked doll in the woods.”

Dolly is in cinemas from Friday 6 March .
