Girls aren’t the only ones weeping over Jacob Elordi. The Australian actor found himself in tears following the premiere of his new film Frankenstein, which received a 14-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday.

Both Elordi and his director, Guillermo del Toro, were so moved by the enthusiastic response to the Netflix movie they wiped away tears. Elordi was also filmed hugging his co-stars Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth.

More from Rolling Stone

The film, an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s 1818 classic novel of the same name, stars Elordi as the famed monster, who is sewn together and brought to life by Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Isaac). Goth plays Elizabeth, Victor’s doomed childhood sweetheart, and Christoph Waltz plays Harlander, an arms dealer.

Speaking during a press conference over the weekend, Elordi said he gave the performance his all. “It was a vessel that I could put every part of myself into,” he said (via Deadline). “From the moment that I was born to being here with you today, all of it is in that character. And in so many ways, the the creature that’s onscreen in this movie is the sort of purest form of myself. He’s more me than than I am.”

Del Toro added of his desire to remake the iconic story, “It was a religion for me. Since I was a kid — I was raised very Catholic — I never quite understood the saints. And then when I saw Boris Karloff on the screen, I understood what a saint or a messiah looked like. So I’ve been following the creature since I was a kid, and I always waited for the movie to be done in the right conditions, both creatively in terms of achieving the scope that it needed for me to make it different, to make it at a scale that you could reconstruct the whole world.”

In August, Elordi told Variety he spent up to 10 hours a day in the makeup chair to prepare to play Frankenstein’s monster. “There’s so many different layers to the costume,” he said. “When he’s born, he’s wearing nearly nothing. His chest is open and his head is high. Then, as he starts to experience pain, as we do as a teenager, he starts to hunch his shoulders. And as an adult, he closes off.”

Frankenstein arrives in theaters on Oct. 17 before heading to Netflix on Nov. 7.
