What is “Pluribus”? All about the happiness epidemic infecting Vince Gilligan’s new sci-fi series

Key Points

  • Pluribus is a new sci-fi series from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan.

  • Rhea Seehorn plays the “most miserable person on Earth [who] must save the world from happiness.”

  • The series hits Apple TV on Nov. 7.

It takes guts to call your new, original TV show Pluribus, but if anyone’s earned the privilege of such a puzzling title, it’s Vince Gilligan.

Gilligan, after all, is responsible for two of the most celebrated TV series of the past few decades in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Now, the prolific writer, director, and producer is back with a bold new project, a sci-fi series with one of the most compelling premises we’ve heard in ages.

So, what is Pluribus? Where can you watch it? And why is everyone so damn happy? We answer these questions and more below.

What is Pluribus about?

“The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness,” reads the logline of Pluribus. It is perhaps the greatest of all loglines.

We’d have tuned in even without further details, but Gilligan was kind enough to break down what, exactly, Pluribus is about in a September 2025 chat with Entertainment Weekly.

Pluribus, like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, is set in Albuquerque, N.M., which is transformed after a mysterious virus infects everyone with an unwavering sense of happiness and optimism. Well, everyone except Carol Sturka.

Played by Better Call Saul‘s Rhea Seehorn, Carol is a successful author of historical romance novels that she deems “mindless crap.” Now, the curmudgeon is forced to contend with a society that desperately wants her to be as content and carefree as the rest of them.

Why is Carol immune? Gilligan isn’t particularly interested in that question just yet. “[It] never really occurred to me as a question,” he told EW. “I just figured there’s always gotta be a one-in-a-billion person. And it’s Carol. As to the science of it, I don’t know. Maybe we’ll have an answer, maybe we won’t.”

It’s a rich and mordant premise, particularly in an era where social media has incentivized users to present their lives as picture-perfect. “Toxic positivity” is very real (and very annoying).

What has Vince Gilligan said about Pluribus?

Speaking with EW, Gilligan said the idea for Pluribus first surfaced roughly a decade ago, when he was working on Better Call Saul.

“During our lunch breaks, I would take long walks around the neighborhood near our offices. My mind would wander and I got interested in the idea of a world in which everyone was nice,” Gilligan told us. “There was no way you could insult them. There was no way you could hurt their feelings. But they would do anything and everything for you.”

He added, “What interests me about this show and the possibilities for it is that people, I hope, can watch it and say, ‘What would the world be like if everybody got along?’ There’s probably a bit of wish fulfillment in the idea of this show.”

While the premise is inherently comedic, Gilligan said he also mines it for a “surprising amount of drama.” Seehorn’s Carol, he explained, is a “reluctant hero,” saying she “doesn’t really want to be tasked with saving the world, but she more or less feels like it’s her duty.”

And while Pluribus doesn’t unfold in the same universe as Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, he did tease “an Easter egg or two” for fans of those shows. Just be sure to “keep your eyes and ears peeled.”

Is there a Pluribus trailer?

After a series of short teasers, Apple TV released a the first trailer for Pluribus a few weeks before its premiere. Without spoiling too much, the two-minute clip finds Carol weathering ample concern for her less-than-cheery demeanor.

“Good morning, Carol. Is there anything we can do to cheer you up?” asks a robotic voice over the phone.

“We just want you to be happy,” says another character.

“Rest assured, Carol, we will figure out what makes you different,” says another.

Seehorn leads the cast after landing two Emmy nominations for her turn as attorney Kim Wexler on Gilligan’s Better Call Saul, which she starred on for six seasons from 2016 to 2022.

Gilligan revealed to EW that he built the series around the actress. “Initially I was thinking in terms of a male protagonist because that’s how I think being a guy,” he said. “But then I thought, well, what about Rhea? She’s so good. She’s so funny when she wants to be, but can also break your heart when she wants to.”

The supporting cast consists of Carlos Manuel Vesga (The Luckiest Man in America), Karolina Wydra (Sneaky Pete), Miriam Shor (American Fiction), and Samba Schutte (Our Flag Means Death).
