The competition was stiff this week heading out of the Sweet 16 into the Elite 8, so let’s go over the stats before the next round is underway Monday.
No, I’m not talking about March Madness — though I’m honored you think my basketball knowledge is that extensive. I’m talking about The Desert Sun’s best all-time Paul McCartney song bracket.
Every Monday until the week before McCartney’s Sept. 29 concert at Acrisure Arena, The Desert Sun is asking fans to vote in the latest round of our McCartney song tournment. Let’s see what songs fell off this week, and which ones are still in the game.
The Sweet 16 — now Elite 8 — best Paul McCartney songs contenders
The remaining contenders are bolded, while those that didn’t make the top eight are crossed off:
“The Long and Winding Road” (1970)
“Can’t Buy Me Love” (1964)
“Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” (1967)
“I Saw Her Standing There” (1963)
“Maybe I’m Amazed” (1970)
“Paperback Writer” (1966)
“Silly Love Songs” (1976)
“Live and Let Die” (1973)

The first round received a total of 1,112 votes from 143 people (remember, you can vote once per hour) and was a true nail-biter for “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” which were neck-and-neck for much of the voting period. But it was “Can’t Buy Me Love” that won by a mere three votes.
The next-closest race was between “Eleanor Rigby” and “I Saw Her Standing There,” but it was “Eleanor Rigby” that won with 76 votes to “I Saw Her Standing There”‘s 61.
The biggest blowout — which most of us saw coming —was between “Let It Be” and “Silly Love Songs.” The former, to hopefully no one’s surprise, won by a difference of 106 votes.
So, who will make it to the Final Four? That’s up to you.
How voting works
The next round of voting opens at 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, and ends at noon Thursday, Sept. 11. It then continues round-by-round until a winner is crowned on Monday, Sept. 22, a week before McCartney takes the stage in Palm Desert.
Fans can vote once an hour per matchup. We’ll provide an update on the bracket and share highlights from each round — including which songs dominate and which pull off surprise upsets.
