Thanks to a strong recent showing, Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. was named the American League Player of the Week after batting .407 with a 1.263 OPS. He totaled three home runs, seven runs scored, four RBIs, and added two stolen bases during the standout stretch.

Speaking on MLB Network on Wednesday, he said that the honor was “awesome” and that what he cares most about is winning games for the Royals, who are fighting for position in the AL Central Division.
“It’s awesome, and we’re winning some baseball games with it, too,” Witt Jr. said via MLB Network on X. “That’s obviously the ultimate goal, just to go out there and win. I feel like when you’re trying to do that, these things kind of just happen.”
Earlier this season, Witt Jr. managed to duck being drenched in Gatorade by teammate Salvador Perez, who accidentally splashed a nearby female security guard. As Witt Jr. put it, everyone was a good sport about it, and he’s happy that a nearby police officer wasn’t doused instead.

“We got a picture with her, signed it, me and Salvy,” Witt Jr. said about the incident. “It was one of those moments that I could feel Salvy coming, so I knew it was time to duck. Salvy was excited that it didn’t hit the police officer standing next to me. I’m glad everyone was laughing, and she was good with it, so yeah, it was a fun moment.”
Witt Jr., who grew up with three sisters who all ran track, credited his speed to them.
“No doubt, they all ran track, and they’re all fast,” he said. “I got it from them, that’s for sure.”
