Just after the 30th anniversary of his first James Bond film GoldenEye‘s release in November 1995, Pierce Brosnan is getting real about what it would take for him to appear in another 007 film.
When asked by British GQ magazine whether he would ever consider playing a retired agent in a future installation from the franchise, the 72-year-old said, “Sometimes you entertain it and sometimes you just move on.” He admitted that being in a blockbuster franchise “really gets in the way of life.”

As for taking back the titular role? That’s out of the question at the moment. “Of course, people ask about Bond – ‘would you?’ and whatever – but that’s another man’s job,” said the father of five. “But the possibilities of working within that film… It’s going to be exciting to see what happens. I think everything changes, everything falls apart, so you just sit back and enjoy it all.”
There are a lot of changes coming for the iconic film series. In February 2025, creative control was sold to Amazon MGM Studios for $1 billion from Eon Productions and the Broccoli family, who owned the IP for generations.
Under Amazon MGM Studios, it was announced that Dune director Denis Villeneuve is stepping in for the next installment, along with producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman and Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight as writer. The new regime did initially pique the interest of Brosnan, who starred in four Bond films before leaving after 2002’s Die Another Day.
“I don’t think anyone wants to see a craggy, 72-year-old Bond, but if Villeneuve had something up his sleeve, I would look at it in a heartbeat,” he told Radio Times previously, though it seems his opinion may have changed since then. “It could be lots of laughs. Bald caps, prosthetics … who knows?” The next Bond star still has yet to be announced.

Brosnan, who was preceded in the role by Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, and Timothy Dalton and succeeded by Daniel Craig, has continued to have a fruitful acting career after his time as James Bond. The actor starred in massive hits like Laws of Attraction, Mamma Mia!, and Percy Jackson, and his latest action film, Cliffhanger 2, is set to be released in 2026.
