The reruns are almost over as is the hosts’ summer hiatus after ABC’s ‘The View’ announced their upcoming return for a new Season 29 on Sept. 8 — despite backlash from the White House.
In a promo posted on Monday, Sept. 1, the show’s hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Ana Navarro and Alyssa Farah Griffin announced, “OK people, the countdown is on to an all new season of ‘The View,’ the most watched Emmy-nominated number-one daytime talk show.”
The White House warned “The View” about the potential to be “pulled off the air” after a scathing criticism of President Donald Trump by Joy Behar after the July 23rd episode. The next day, the talk show announced they were going on hiatus.
During the Wednesday, July 23 episode, co-host Whoopi Goldberg introduced a topic about Trump accusing former President Barak Obama of treasonous behavior, to which Behar responded:
“First of all, who tried to overthrow the government on Jan. 6? Who was that again? That was not Obama,” she said, referring to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. “The thing about him is he’s so jealous of Obama, because Obama is everything that he is not: trim, smart, handsome, happily married, and can sing Al Green’s song ‘Let’s Stay Together’ better than Al Green. And Trump cannot stand it. It’s driving him crazy.”
The episode prompted a follow-up statement from White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers to Entertainment Weekly, “Joy Behar is an irrelevant loser suffering from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome,” she said before claiming “The View” has its “lowest ratings” in recent years.
The statement continued, adding that Behar “should self-reflect on her own jealousy of President Trump’s historic popularity before her show is the next to be pulled off air.”
A spokesperson for The View responded to the WH statement by claiming that it is “up in total viewers and women 18-49, versus the comparable weeks last season, to its most-watched in four years,” adding that “season to date, “The View” is ranking No. 1 in households and total viewers among all network daytime talk shows and news programs for the fifth straight season.”
