The Fourth of July is this Saturday, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. From hot dog eating contests to live music and fireworks, there are plenty of ways to celebrate Independence Day in and around Austin.
Here are seven ways Central Texans are celebrating the nation’s birthday.
Star-Spangled Fest
The 49th annual Austin Symphony Orchestra July 4th Concert and Fireworks is taking place at Auditorium Shores, presented by H-E-B. The free event begins at 4:30 p.m. with live music, lawn games and dozens of food trucks offering a variety of options. The Austin Symphony will play around 8:00 p.m., followed by a lakefront fireworks show. VIP access to cabanas, air conditioning and private cash bars can be found here.
The Morning Spin at Star-Spangled Fest
For those looking for a morning celebration before the fireworks, The Mushroom Cowboy and The Concourse Project are hosting an event at Auditorium Shores from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m, with live performances, house music and coffee. Tickets start at $30.
Hot dog eating contest at Hotel Vegas
Hotel Vegas is hosting its fifth annual hot dog eating contest, with hot dogs provided by Grandpa’s Glizzys. The 21+ event begins at 12 p.m. with a watch party of World Cup matches, followed by the contest at 8 p.m. Attendees must sign up for the hot dog eating contest at 6 p.m. for a chance at a cash prize.
Willie Nelson’s Fourth of July Picnic
Willie Nelson’s Fourth of July, a country tradition since 1972, returns to the Germania Insurance Amphitheater with performances by Nelson, Billy Strings, Sheryl Crow and more. The event will also include a fireworks show, food and drinks. The event begins at 4 p.m., and tickets are on sale on Ticketmaster starting at $77.
Texas America250 Exhibition
Learn about Texans’ contributions to the 250-year history of the United States at the Texas America250 Exhibition, which is on display at the Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library, located next to the Texas Capitol. The exhibit is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every weekday and includes key 20th century artifacts, state records and even the State of Texas Medal of Valor gifted to the Apollo 11 astronauts.
Fourth of July ’90s Tribute Fest
Hole in the Wall, located steps from UT Austin, is hosting a ’90s Tribute Fest for alternative rock fans from 4 p.m. to midnight. There will be tribute performances honoring bands like The Cure, Nirvana, Green Day and more. The 21+ event will also include local food vendors and activity booths. Buy tickets for $24.
Rancho Moonrise Fourth of July Music Festival
Rancho Moonrise in Manor is hosting an Independence Day-themed festival with live music, western two-step dance lessons and an open pool. The all-ages event runs from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. and is pet friendly. Tickets are $24 online.
