Downtown celebration will honor America250 with music, fireworks and community activities
Main Street Wooster and the City of Wooster are inviting the community to celebrate Independence Day with a weekend of free entertainment in Historic Downtown Wooster.
In recognition of the nationwide America250 celebration, residents and visitors can participate in extra attractions over the July 4 holiday.
“We are excited to partner with the City of Wooster and the Ohio Light Opera,” said Shannon Waller, executive director of Main Street Wooster. “We’re looking forward to providing memorable experiences that honor our nation’s 250th anniversary while bringing people together in the heart of downtown.”
Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. July 3 in Public Square. A three-hour edition of Main Street Music will feature Bayou Blue, an Ohio-based tribute band performing the music of Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Linda Ronstadt. The evening will kick off with a military flyover.
The Downtown Wooster Farmers Market will take place in its usual Public Square location from 8 a.m. to noon July 4. The entertainment will continue at 7 p.m. when the Ohio Light Opera will present its annual Pops Concert in downtown Wooster. The Ohio Light Opera will perform a variety of patriotic songs and show tunes in a complimentary concert.
“OLO looks forward to sharing this annual complimentary concert with our fellow community members,” said Laura M. Neill, executive director and company manager of the Ohio Light Opera. “Our wonderful orchestra is front and center, along with beautiful singers. It’s become a treasured tradition for all of us, and we can’t wait to see everyone this year in celebration of America’s 250th.”
Joel Montgomery, director of administration for the City of Wooster, said, “The mayor and city administration would like to thank everyone for all the extra work that went into ensuring that the activities throughout the Independence Day weekend far exceeded our customary July 4 celebrations. We also want to give a special thank-you to Gil Ning and the Fireworks Foundation for their efforts on this year’s July 4 fireworks program and Wooster Rotary for organizing the community picnic July 5.”
The picnic will feature food trucks and live music and will take place in Public Square from 1-4 p.m.
These events are free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
