Steven Knight, the man behind hit television shows like Peaky Blinders, Taboo, See, and even Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, is taking on theJames Bond franchise next as the screenwriter for the upcoming film directed by Denis Villeneuve.
Recently, Knight briefly commented on the highly anticipated film, teasing his vision for the story while also touching on the intense challenge of casting a new actor to play James Bond, also known as Agent 007.
In an interview with Radio Times magazine, Knight began by saying, “I can’t talk about it,” before giving a few teasy answers to the publication’s questions.
Radio Times asked if Knight planned to bring the “edginess” of projects like Peaky Blinders into the new Bond movie, with the writer replying, “We’ll see, we’ll see… You don’t know what’s going to happen until you start writing.”
The publication then brought up the hot topic of casting the new lead, with Knight saying that he didn’t know who would play the iconic character next. He was then asked if he was writing the new script with no particular actor in mind, to which he hesitantly said, “Er… yes.”
The Search for a New Bond Is Ongoing
Whoever plays Bond next has big shoes to fill, as they are following Daniel Craig‘s beloved portrayal of the popular character. Fans are eager to see what direction the studio goes in for the new special agent, although they are sure to have strong opinions no matter who gets picked.
Before Craig, the role was played by an array of talented actors, including Pierce Brosnan, Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, George Lazenby and David Niven.
Knight Teased His Script in an Earlier Interview
Knight was announced as the writer for the new film at the end of July, and soon after the news broke, the screenwriter opened up about working on the exciting new project.
In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, via Radio Times, Knight noted that the opportunity had “always been on my bucket list,” before declaring, “I can’t wait to get started.”
Knight then gave a peek at the sort of energy he is bringing to the new Bond film, saying, “I’m hoping that, being a Bond fan for so many years, it will be imbued into me and I will be able to produce something that’s the same but different, and better, stronger and bolder.”
