WWE is reportedly planning a significantly reduced card for the 2026 “Royal Rumble,” continuing a trend of leaner premium live events. According to a new report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the historic event scheduled for January 31 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, will feature only four matches in total.
The report indicates that the card will consist of the Men’s and Women’s “Royal Rumble” matches alongside just two championship bouts. This structure mirrors the formatting used for “Survivor Series: WarGames” in 2025, which also presented a tighter broadcast featuring two “WarGames” matches and two title fights. By limiting the card to four high-stakes contests, WWE appears to be prioritizing longer match times and video packages over a high volume of bouts.
“The details of the two title matches remain unknown. WWE officials are discussing options but haven’t locked in challengers or champions yet since the show is still nearly two months out,” the report stated.

The decision to keep the card “tight” provides WWE creative with significant flexibility. With the event still weeks away, the company has room to adapt storylines as they develop through upcoming key dates, including “NXT Deadline,” “Saturday Night’s Main Event” featuring John Cena’s final match on December 13, and “Saturday Night’s Main Event XLIII” in January.
This “Royal Rumble” marks a significant milestone for the company as the first traditional “Royal Rumble” event to be held outside of North America. It serves as the 14th event in WWE’s 10-year partnership with Saudi Arabia and is part of the Riyadh Season festival. While the “Greatest Royal Rumble” in 2018 featured a 50-man match, the 2026 edition will adhere to the standard 30-person format for both men and women.
The stakes for the match remain as high as ever. The winners of the respective Rumble matches will earn a world championship opportunity at “WrestleMania 42.” Uniquely, the winners will have the choice to challenge for either the titles on “Raw” (World Heavyweight Championship or Women’s World Championship) or “SmackDown” (Undisputed WWE Championship or WWE Women’s Championship).
With the event airing on Peacock in the United States and Netflix internationally, the streamlined card suggests a broadcast strategy focused on maximizing the engagement of the two main event Rumble matches, which typically last around an hour each. As the “Road to WrestleMania” kicks off in Riyadh, fans can expect a focused and high-profile night of action.
