The superhero craze is clearly running out of steam, as demonstrated by the lukewarm box office performance of legitimately good movies like Superman and Fantastic Four: First Steps. That’s true for superhero movies in general, but it’s not true for one specific upcoming superhero movie, which people absolutely still want: The Batman II.
When James Gunn took over DC and launched his new cinematic universe, there was some concern that the anticipated sequel to Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated The Batman might be canceled along with all other previous DC universe plans. Indeed, it’s been three years since the release of the first movie, and there hasn’t been much movement on the sequel.
James Gunn has been assuring people all along that The Batman II is still happening, but until now, no one was really certain. Today, Warner Bros. Discovery finally confirmed that The Batman II is going into production, with filming beginning in spring 2026 and a release scheduled for October 1, 2027.
For fans of Batman’s stylistic approach to the Caped Crusader, it’s going to be a long wait. There will be nearly six years between the release of The Batman and The Batman II. That’s the second-longest wait fans have had for a Batman movie since the gap between the release of Batman & Robin in 1997 and Batman Begins in 2005.

Except there won’t be a gap in Batman appearances. The Batman happens in a universe unrelated to whatever’s happening in James Gunn’s new DC superhero universe. He has big plans, and those plans will involve some other Batman, a Batman not played by Robert Pattinson. The Brave and the Bold is Gunn’s upcoming Batman movie, and it’ll introduce Batman’s son, Damian Wayne.
