Mary Shelley’s iconic 1818 novel, Frankenstein, might have served as the primary inspiration for Guillermo del Toro‘s latest horror film, but there’s a horrific incident from the filmmaker’s past that also influenced his upcoming feature. In a recent interview, the Oscar winner revealed that his father’s unfortunate abduction in the 1990s played a significant role in his conceptualization of the Oscar Isaac-led flick.

Guillermo del Toro explains how his father’s kidnapping influenced Frankenstein

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival, Guillermo del Toro noted that he added the theme of forgiveness to his Frankenstein movie after having an extensive discussion with his father about the latter’s kidnapping.

“My father was kidnapped in 1998, and when he came back, he didn’t talk about it,” the Mexican director said before adding, “Then before he passed, I said, ‘We have to sit down and you gotta tell me what happened.’ That was very important for me to understand the man.”

In the aftermath of this conversation, Guillermo del Toro learned the significance of forgiveness, which he later incorporated into his Frankenstein flick. However, the movie does not explore the simple concept of one person pardoning another. Instead, it focuses on “forgiving someone and forgiving yourself into being,” as per Del Toro.

The acclaimed filmmaker further explained how his gothic horror feature deals with the subject of forgiveness by saying, “What you realize is a grudge takes two prisoners and forgiveness liberates two people. I thought I could make the movie, but then I went, ‘No, thank God it didn’t happen until now.’”

Notably, a gang of Mexican criminals had executed the kidnapping of Guillermo del Toro’s father in the 1990s. According to UPROXX, the Hellboy director did not have enough money to pay the $1 million ransom to ensure his father’s freedom back then. Nevertheless, he was able to retrieve his dad safely after James Cameron shelled out the required amount from his own pocket.
