The Summer I Turned Pretty showrunner and trilogy author Jenny Han teased the series finale in a new interview.
TSITP‘s final two episodes mark a major departure from the original trilogy, and won’t follow the epilogue of the third book, We’ll Always Have Summer.
The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 finale will air Wednesday, Sept. 17 on Prime Video.
Now that we’ve reached the end of The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3, it’s clear that the show is taking a wildly different approach to ending Belly’s story than the original trilogy. And, as Jenny Han teased in a recent interview, fans shouldn’t expect the Summer I Turned Pretty finale to mirror the epilogue of We’ll Always Have Summer.
“There is so much that is going to surprise fans about how much we’re showing of Belly in Paris and the whole ending,” Jenny told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s not just an epilogue.”
The last book in Jenny’s original series ends with a 2-page epilogue that briefly explains how Belly and Conrad got back together. Belly goes to study abroad in Spain, where she starts receiving letters from Conrad—just like she did in episode 10 of TSITP—and eventually the two reunite at her college graduation.

Already, the show has changed a lot about the conclusion to Belly’s story. Not only is she in Paris—a change Jenny told EW she’s “always” been planning—she didn’t go home for her graduation, choosing to stay another year in Paris instead. “There’s just so much to living on your own, for the first time, in a foreign place, and that’s important for Belly as she’s growing up,” Jenny added of the decision to spend multiple episodes in Paris.
The penultimate episode ended with Conrad buying a plane ticket to Paris to see Belly, so it does seem like Bonrad might still be on their way to a romantic reunion, like in the epilogue, but with all the changes, we can’t say for sure.
As a card-carrying member of Team Conrad, I’m hoping that the major difference Jenny has is hinting at is that we’ll actually get to see Belly and Conrad talk through their feelings about the wedding, get back together, and actually start to build a real, adult relationship.
