Jacobs Entertainment has plans to build 12 athletic fields over the course of six years for traveling youth athletic tournaments.
They already secured land for the first three fields. Two of them will be on the corner of Ralston Street and West Second Street, and the third will be along West Second Street south of the J Resort.
The resort’s assistant director of special events, Richard Jacobs, says there’s no official start date for construction, but they will be breaking ground very soon on the first three fields, with a fourth soon to follow as soon as they find a location for that one.
Jacobs says, “Construction timelines can be relatively unpredictable, but we’re very confident that we’re going to be done by the end of May, starting relatively soon. The plans are already finished drawing, so we’re ready to go.”
They’ll come with a few extra amenities, too.
“There will be a family fun zone that we’re putting in right across the street from the new front entrance of the J Resort, and that will be a nice location for the children and the parents to go in between games or later at night.”
The first four fields will accommodate all soccer and lacrosse youth age groups, including seven-on-seven, nine-on-nine, and 11-on-11 play.
Justin Cutler, President of the High Sierra Lacrosse League, says this is very exciting considering the limited space they have to play right now, “We are woefully short on field space for our youth athletes, so we’re really excited about the J Resort project.”
Cutler says his only concern is whether there will be availability for practices and not just tournaments.
Jacobs Entertainment says that while they don’t have an official schedule yet, they do fully intend to allow time for teams to be able to practice.
“We’re just hoping to add some to alleviate the pressure that they have because we’ve been talking to them and they run out of fields pretty quickly,” Jacobs said.
He says traveling youth sports has been rapidly growing in Nevada’s tourism industry, so they expect hosting tournaments will bring a heavy economic impact.
“We’re going to see a lot of hotel rooms, a lot of room nights out of this. We’re excited for that, and it’ll also give the local families of Reno a good outlet, a good place to lay back and play some soccer,” he said.
The J Resort’s first traveling youth soccer weekend is scheduled for June 5th and 6th of next year.
