Ryan Seacrest has shared the sad news that his father, Gary Seacrest, has died at the age of 79.
The Wheel of Fortune host, 50, took to Instagram on Friday, October 31, to announce the loss but did not specify the cause of death. The post featured a carousel of photos of Ryan with Gary and the rest of the family with the last photo being a sweet throwback of a young Ryan with Gary, with them both dressed in suits.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that my loving father peacefully passed away earlier this week,” Ryan wrote in the caption. “My mom, sister and I have peace knowing he is in a better place and free of any pain or suffering. We are heartbroken.”

“He was a devoted husband for 56 years, an incredible Papa to Flora, and my best friend. Dad you will live in our hearts forever. I love you,” he concluded.
Ryan’s celebrity pals were quick to share their condolences and support. GMA host Michael Strahan said, “Love, prayers and condolences to you and your family.” Maggie Sajak, who is the daughter of former Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak, posted a single white heart emoji.
Singer Josh Groban, wrote, “Love to you and your family Ryan,” while Saved By The Bell actor Mario Lopez commented, “God bless you and your family bro.” Radio producer and author Patty Rodriguez said, naming Ryan’s mother and sister, “Ryan all my love to you and Connie, Meredith, and your family. Gary was an amazing and honorable man. He will forever live in all of you.”
Ryan’s foundation, the Ryan Foundation, also wrote a tribute for Gary on Instagram. The organization wrote in their caption, “Together with his wife Connie and their children Meredith and Ryan, Gary helped found the Ryan Seacrest Foundation. He took immense pride in the joy and inspiration it brings to children and families during some of their toughest times, and his warmth, kindness, and unwavering support helped shape who we are today.”
While Ryan did not disclose the cause of his father’s death, the television personality spoke about his dad’s difficult battle with prostate cancer on his radio show, On Air with Ryan Seacrest, back in July. Ryan got emotional as he shared on-air that his father’s cancer “got worse” and spread after his father was in remission.
Back in 2021, Ryan had shared a post that said his father had been “battling cancer for several years” but had overcome the disease as “it’s no longer detectable.”
In the July episode of his radio show, he opened up about how it’s been hard to watch his father go through this obstacle. Ryan elaborated, “When this happens to somebody or someone really close to you that you love, this is a hard thing to see, because the treatments that are commonly recommended can be barbaric to the system. They can cause so much damage to your body in other ways.”
Ryan further shared that his father had gotten pneumonia while he was undergoing chemotherapy, which kept Gary in the ICU for weeks. He also revealed that his mother was in remission from cancer.
In July as well, Ryan wished his father a happy 81st birthday with a sweet Instagram post, which he captioned, “Happy birthday, Dad. Glad you’re enjoying a fried egg sandwich with mustard again this year for your bday breakfast! Here’s to many more. Love you.”
Gary is survived by his wife, Connie Seacrest, children Ryan and Meredith, and granddaughter Flora
