The View cohost Sara Haines broke down in tears after a week of covering hard-hitting Hot Topics at the talk show table.
The 48-year-old cried as she lamented the state of the world to series producer Brian Teta, as the pair discussed the week’s events on the latest episode of the Behind the Table podcast (below).
Teta began the conversation by highlighting a struggle to remain positive amid the news the cohosts have covered this week, ranging from an immigration agent shooting and killing 37-year-old nurse Alex Pretti in Minnesota to Donald Trump’s bizarre phone call with Josh Shapiro after the Pennsylvania governor and his family survived an assassination attempt.

“We’re in dark times,” Teta observed, while Haines maintained that “it’s our job to be read-in and dialed-in, so the amount of consumption is so great that that stuff that’s going on in the world — then, your world happens.”
She went on to admit that “the weight of that brings you to your knees in a level that says, the greater world is on fire, your world is on fire, why get out of bed?”
Haines paused as she attempted to continue with her point, before crying as she said, “That’s going to make me emotional.”
She then lowered her head to her hand, while Teta brought up Haines’ past openness about her mental health when he noted that she’s “prone to a certain amount of depression” in her life.

“With this job, you don’t have the luxury of just saying, ‘I really need to check out,’ which, in life, I always was able to do that. This job? It’s headlines, it’s stories, it’s what’s happening, so I’m paid to make sure I’m doing all these things,” Haines continued, lamenting her feeling that “you don’t really have a safe space” to do that while staying on top of grim news on The View.
“With the world being what it is, it doesn’t matter who you run into — my husband, friends, everyone is talking about it. So, there’s no place to go. That’s why I’m so grateful for my kids, because their worlds are so innocent still and pure, and I try to tap into putting my phone aside when I’m with them, which I already try to do,” she added. “They’re my favorite people, anyway. But, the world hasn’t tainted them yet, you know?”
Haines and husband Max Shifrin share three children, who have made appearances on The View alongside their mother in the past.
In addition to voicing opinions on difficult topics this week, The View cohosts have also grappled with the extended absence of longtime panelist Joy Behar, who hasn’t sat at the Hot Topics table since Jan. 23 due to a mystery illness.
