For most actors, writers, and filmmakers, winning an Oscar is seen as the biggest honour in Hollywood. The golden statue given at the Academy Awards is often the dream of many people working in movies. Over the years, many winners have said they do not care about awards, but very few have actually turned one down after winning.

However, in the long history of the Oscars, a small number of winners chose not to accept the famous statue from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Their reasons were different, ranging from political beliefs to personal principles. Among the most talked-about cases are Dudley Nichols, George C. Scott, and Marlon Brando.

Dudley Nichols and the fight for writers’ rights

Screenwriter Dudley Nichols was an important figure in Hollywood during his time. Besides writing films, he later became president of the Writers Guild of America. His Oscar story began with the 1935 film The Informer. The film, based on a book about Ireland’s 1922 War of Independence, became a strong competitor at the 1936 Oscars. While Mutiny on the Bounty won Best Picture, The Informer still won several awards, including Best Actor, Best Director, Best Score, and Best Screenplay for Nichols.

But Nichols decided not to accept the award at the time. According to reports, he declined the Oscar because Hollywood workers were pushing to form unions in the wake of the Great Depression of the early 1930s to secure better pay. By refusing the award, Nichols was showing support for those efforts.

Later, in 1938, after the creation of the then-named Screen Writers Guild, Nichols finally agreed to accept his Oscar. That organisation would later become the modern Writers Guild of America.

George C. Scott’s strong stand

Another famous rejection came decades later from actor George C. Scott. Scott delivered a powerful performance as General George S. Patton in the 1970 war film

. His acting earned him the Best Actor award, but Scott did not attend the ceremony. In fact, before the Oscars even took place, he sent a telegram to the Academy explaining that he had no intention of accepting the award and would have preferred not to be nominated at all.

Scott believed acting should not be treated as a competition between performers. He also had strong opinions about filmmaking compared to theatre acting. In an interview with Time magazine before the ceremony, Scott said, “Film is not an actor’s medium.” He explained that scenes are often filmed out of order, adding that “You shoot scenes in order of convenience, not the way they come in the script, and that’s detrimental to a fully developed performance.”

Even though Scott refused the award, the film Patton went on to win several Oscars that year.

One of the most famous Oscar rejections happened in 1973 with legendary actor Marlon Brando. Brando won the Best Actor award for his role as Don Vito Corleone in

, directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

However, Brando did not attend the ceremony. Instead, he sent Native American actress Sacheen Littlefeather to the stage to refuse the award on his behalf. Littlefeather delivered a short statement based on a much longer speech written by Brando. The message focused on Brando’s support for Native American rights and the situation surrounding the occupation of Wounded Knee.
