While dumping on President Donald Trump’s abysmal attempt at comedy during Friday’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart also had some choice words for the hosts of the event.
“But it was the next moment that, for me, solidified that this event is worse than pro forma,” Stewart said. “It’s actually an act of submission.”
Stewart then showed a portion of Wolf Blitzer’s speech presenting Wall Street Journal journalists with an award for their reporting on Trump’s relationship with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In the clip, Trump could be seen laughing and shrugging when Blitzer said that the president’s $20 billion lawsuit against the newspaper revealed the home address of reporter Khadeeja Safdar, forcing her family to relocate for their safety.
“She wrote an objectively true story about my depraved relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. And I got her life threatened,” Stewart said, impersonating Trump.
“Did I do that?” he continued, giving the impression a Steve Urkel twist.
Stewart added that he expected members of the press to be mad at Trump for his numerous attacks on the free press, but said they seemed to be acting as if it was business as usual.
“So, he just gets to shake hands with the leaders of a profession, with the leaders of a profession whose members he has subpoenaed, arrested, sued, cut their funding, threatened their licenses, barred their access, and even had fucking deported,” Stewart said while showing clips of the WSJ reporters shaking hands with Trump after receiving the award.
Stewart also noted that the Epstein Files release might have gone differently if Trump had known there was an award involved.
“He’d have told them about the Epstein Files himself,” Stewart said.
