One of the most successful horror franchises in recent memory, A Quiet Place became a surprise blockbuster when it earned $334 million worldwide off of a $17 million budget back in 2018. The film spawned a sequel, “Part II,” and a prequel, “Day One,” and the whole saga has thus far earned $892 million at the global box office.
A fourth film, A Quiet Place Part III (prequels always screw up the numbering, just ask the Resident Evil video game series!), was originally slated to launch on July 9, 2027, but now Deadline has revealed that the film is shifting its release date to July 30, three weeks later.
Presumably, the producers at Paramount didn’t want A Quiet Place Part III to have to compete with Man of Tomorrow, the upcoming Superman sequel from writer/director James Gunn. While Superman might not seem like an obvious rival to A Quiet Place since they’re theoretically in totally different genres, A Quiet Place’s box office numbers have proven that the series transcends traditional box office norms, likely due to its PG-13 rating and themes of family bonds. It’s still horror, but it casts a much wider net than you might expect from your typical “monster movie” fare. Even so, I wouldn’t want to compete with Superman, either.
As such, A Quiet Place has moved three weeks, where the box office will presumably be a bit less crowded. That way, it can be the ‘big man on campus’ instead of having to compete directly with Superman.
There are currently no public story details on A Quiet Place Part III, but most trilogies usually end with the third entry (duh), so hopes are high that this entry can continue the franchise’s winning streak at the box office. The 2021 sequel was the first genuine box office success of the Covid era, earning $160 million in domestic grosses, and $296 worldwide. Day One, as a stand-alone prequel, wasn’t expected to have the same success as a “mainline” entry, but still managed to rake in $139 million domestic and $261 worldwide. With Krasinski back to write and direct, and continuing the storyline from the first two films, A Quiet Place Part III has the potential to be as big a hit as the 2018 original, possibly even bigger.
