ALPENA COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — A proposed entertainment complex at the Alpena County Fairgrounds is no longer moving forward after county commissioners voted to end negotiations with the developer.
County commissioners voted Tuesday morning, June 9, to end negotiations with Blackwaters LLC, the company that had proposed building a large entertainment complex at the site.
The project would have included a festival stage, special events, and cleanup and upgrades to the current fairgrounds.
Commissioners originally approved the proposal in April, contingent on a lease agreement between Blackwaters and the Alpena County Fair Society.
The Fair Society Board later ended negotiations with the company, citing concerns over Blackwaters having exclusive control of its improvements and the requirement that the Fair Society move most items from the grounds at the end of each annual fair.
Continued discussions between county commissioners and Blackwaters drew significant opposition from community members at recent meetings.
In a 5-3 vote, commissioners voted to end negotiations with the company.
