Mayhem and marriage (sometimes the same thing) rule the new movies in Milwaukee theaters this week.
Here’s what’s new in Milwaukee-area theaters starting Aug. 29, as well as some of the new movies available on streaming and on demand this week.
Austin Butler stars in “Caught Stealing.”
‘Caught Stealing’
Short version: In 1990s New York City, an ex-baseball player (Austin Butler) is targeted by three separate criminal gangs after he does a favor for a less-than-scrupulous pal (Matt Smith). Zoe Kravitz, Regina King, Bad Bunny, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio and Carol Kane co-star in this dark, violent crime comedy directed by Darren Aronofsky (“Requiem for a Dream,” “Pi”).

‘The Roses’
Short version: Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman play the seemingly perfect couple whose marriage dissolves into chaotic and comic violence in this remake of the 1989 dark comedy “The War of the Roses.” Kate McKinnon, Andy Samberg and Allison Janney co-star.

‘The Toxic Avenger’
Short version: Toxie gets an upgrade in this reboot of the beloved Grade Z comic horror classic, with Peter Dinklage playing the janitor who, after being exposed to some toxic goo, becomes the title sort-of hero. Jacob Tremblay and Taylour Paige co-star in the unrated horror comedy.

‘Run’
Short version: After leaving her fiancé at the altar, a young woman joins her friends for an escape to a cabin in the woods, where an alien invasion ruins their plans — and maybe their chance to survive. Annie Ngosi Ilonzeh, Marques Houston and Erica Mena star in this horror thriller.

‘The Outsiders’ with C. Thomas Howell Q&A
Whether you’re a Greaser or a Soc, check out a screening of Francis Ford Coppola’s much-loved 1983 adaptation of “The Outsiders” at 8 p.m. Aug. 29 at Turner Hall Ballroom, 1040 N. Phillips Ave. C. Thomas Howell (aka Ponyboy in the movie) and Darren Dalton – who played the lead Soc, Randy – will be on hand for a post-movie Q&A. Tickets are $38.35 and $57.89. Info: pabsttheatergroup.com.
‘Sign o’ the Times’ in IMAX
Prince’s 1987 concert movie “Sign o’ the Times” — one of the best in the genre, and maybe better than “Purple Rain” at showing Prince at his musical best — is getting a welcome but brief return in IMAX theaters, including at AMC Mayfair Mall, with screenings at 7:15 p.m. Aug. 28, 10 p.m. Aug. 29, 6:45 p.m. Aug. 30 and 2 p.m. Aug. 31. ‘Jaws’ 50th anniversary screenings
Yes, it’s been 50 years since it was safe to go back into the water. You can see the summer movie that changed the summer movie season at the end of the 2025 summer movie season when “Jaws” shows in multiple screenings daily in wide release starting Aug. 29, at AMC Mayfair Mall; Avalon Theater; Marcus Theatres’ Bistroplex Southridge, Hillside, Majestic, Menomonee Falls, Movie Tavern Brookfield Square, North Shore, Ridge, South Shore cinemas; and Oriental Theatre. ‘Clue’ 40th anniversary screenings
Long before they were trying to make movies out of Ouija boards or Jumanji or Battleship, there was “Clue,” the now-beloved 1985 comedy based on the game of the same moniker. It’s back in theaters for its 40th anniversary, with varying showtimes Sept. 1 and 3 at Marcus Theatres’ Hillside, Majestic, Menomonee Falls, North Shore, Ridge and South Shore cinemas. ‘It’s Not Easy Being Green’ movies: ‘Where the Wild Things Are’
In August, Milwaukee Film is showing a series of family-friendly, green-themed movies (not environmental; think the color) in matinees at the Oriental Theatre. For the final weekend, it’s “Where the Wild Things Are” at 4 p.m. Aug. 30-31. Tickets are $13 ($7 for kids 12 and younger). Info: mkefilm.org.

Free outdoor movies in the Milwaukee area
Milwaukee/Lake Park: Lake Park Friends is showing “The Princess Bride” at 8 p.m. Aug. 29 at the park’s Summer Stage, 2975 N. Lake Park Road. Info: lakeparkfriends.org/visit/events.

“Vice Is Broke”: Comedian and chef Eddie Huang (“Fresh off the Boat”) explores the evolution of news site Vice (where he once hosted a show) from scrappy indie magazine to problematic (and bankrupt) media organization. On Mubi Aug. 29.
