As new episodes of When Calls the Heart air every Sunday on Hallmark, it’s hard to believe the show has been going for 13 seasons. But Chris McNally is aware of how lucky he is to be in this position.
Those who’ve been watching WCTH since the beginning know that Chris’ character, Lucas Bouchard, didn’t appear in Hope Valley until season 6. But over time, Lucas has become an integral part of the show … and a fan favorite among viewers. Folks adore seeing the character’s emotional evolution, from being a mysterious bar owner to a well-loved governor.
With all of this in mind, how does Chris feel about the impact that When Calls the Heart continues to have on viewers? As he told Good Housekeeping exclusively, he knows it’s rare for a show to be on the air for this long. But on the flip side, he enjoys that people have such a strong connection to WCTH, which has been going strong for over a decade.
“The longevity of a show like When Calls the Heart is so rare,” he said to us. “The show has kind of become a part of me, and I think it shows that Hallmark has one of the most loyal fan bases out there. They really care about When Calls the Heart and continue to show up and invest their time to watch these characters. I also enjoy attending events where you see everybody and get to know how passionate they are that they’re willing to travel from all over to meet you. It’s definitely a blessing, that’s for sure.”
And the fans aren’t the only things Chris appreciates about working on a Hallmark legacy show.
Chris also acknowledged how special it is to work with his incredible castmates (like Erin Krakow, Kevin McGarry, Pascale Hutton, and plenty more), and how close they have become both on- and off-set. What’s more, he implied that when the time comes for them to move on to different projects, it’ll be bittersweet.
“Acting on TV is selfishly a stressful business to be part of, and I’m relieved about working with this cast,” he added. “We’ve all gotten so close, that it feels like we’re going back to school every summer we return to Hope Valley and film a new season. So, the day when When Calls the Heart eventually comes to a close, I think it’s going to be a very sad day.”
Well, given how When Calls the Heart is already renewed for season 14, we thankfully have more time with Chris and the rest of our favorite citizens of Hope Valley! Now, if only Lucas would find himself a little bit of romance…
