The Running Man director Edgar Wright is opening up about the “real” reason as to why he left Ant-Man.
For many years prior, Wright was working on an Ant-Man movie for Marvel Studios. It was announced in May 2014, however, that Wright was leaving the project due to creative differences. Wright then went on to direct Baby Driver, while Peyton Reed helmed the 2015 MCU movie starring Paul Rudd.
What did Edgar Wright say about Ant-Man?
In a Reddit AMA, Wright was asked if he could explain the “real story” as to why he left Ant-Man and if he could speak about how his version would’ve differed from the final result.
Wright answered, “Short answer. Joe Cornish and I had written the script long before Marvel became as huge as it did, our screenplay existed before Iron Man came out. But when we came to make it in 2014 – they had an established house style, a way of working, and a continuity that didn’t really fit with the more left-field heist movie we’d written. So I knew it was time to leave, because our draft we loved was fading away, and I thought it better if someone else did it. I have never seen the film to this day, but don’t regret leaving.”
After Baby Driver, Wright then went on to helm the 2021 documentary The Sparks Brothers and Last Night in Soho, which was also released in 2021.
Now, Wright directs The Running Man, a new action thriller movie that opens in United States theaters this coming weekend. The film is an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1982 novel of the same name, which was previously turned into a 1987 movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The cast of Wright’s flick includes Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, Colman Domingo, and William H. Macy, among others.
