The pairing of actor Jussie Smollett and reality star Eva Marcille on the latest episode of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test was technically a failure, even though they did an excellent job at supporting each other.

After they worked together on a task, sitting in a plane fully submerged in water for 20 seconds, holding their breath, she swam out into the open waterway, then slipped under the surface. The Young and the Restless actress and America’s Top Model cycle 3 winner had to be pulled onto a boat by the professionals watching.

When she came to, she was rattled. “Oh my God, I could have died!” Marcille said.

After having to be rescued by medics, it was perhaps unexpected that Marcille was found to have done everything that she needed to pass the task. Smollett, however, had not followed instructions exactly and left through the wrong exit.

“She did everything right. I messed up. I went out the back,” the Empire actor reflected.

“She passed. We lost ’cause of my ass. I’m about to f—ing cry, I swear,” he admitted to his costars before walking off distressed.

There was an uneven number of contestants, so Smollett volunteered to be the person who did the assignment twice, this time partnered with Olympic soccer player Christie Pearce Rampone.

He tried pumping himself up, saying, “I really want to make it through. I want to show myself that I can do it.”

Unfortunately, he wasn’t any more successful on his second attempt when he missed the exit again and came out the back, which resulted in a fail.

A now recovered Marcille ran up to comfort her partner, telling him to remember 90 percent of troops fail the test.

“I just had to walk away because I don’t want them to see me crying,” he told her, puttin his arm around her. “It’s easier for me to accept defeat when it’s just me, but when it’s like other people involved…”

After that, the instructors leading the recruits called Smollett in to talk about what had happened and why he had signed up for this competition and he mentioned the 2019 incident in which he said he was the victim of a hate crime, and was accused by the City of Chicago of faking. The incident led to an extensive legal battle that was only settled in May. He has always proclaimed his innocence.

Smollett said he was there because he had been “painted as someone” he’s not — “someone that’s dishonest” and “the opposite of who I really am — and it bothers him. He wanted to show his real self.

“The majority of the world believed that, somehow, I did have something to do with an attack on myself,” Smollett said. “I was out one night, and I was jumped. In court, I was called a liar. I went to jail for something that I didn’t do.” He added that it’s had a “big effect” on his life, and he thinks about it “every single day.”

Special Forces; World’s Toughest Test airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
