A SWAT operation took place during the dead of night on Friday, February 13, with three people being detained and one other person allegedly shooting themselves.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the SWAT operation was part of the ongoing investigation into Guthrie’s disappearance.
On Friday evening, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department tactical team executed a search warrant at a residence, instructing a man and woman inside to exit, reports the Mirror US.
Both complied and were subsequently detained.
NewsNation also reported that a third individual was apprehended nearby during a traffic stop, believed to be associated with the same operation.
Chris McDonough, a retired Southern California homicide detective, clarified to NewsNation, “When someone is detained, it means they’re not under arrest. The reason for that is to conduct further interviews, collect forensic evidence without having to put the individual into a custody situation.”
The neighborhood cordoned off by authorities is located approximately 1.9 miles from Guthrie’s residence. FBI agents subsequently arrived on scene, as reported by NewsNation senior national correspondent Brian Entin, who was the first journalist to reach the location.
Local resident Peter Molk described how the substantial law enforcement deployment had unsettled the community.
“It’s making everybody nervous. It’s just surreal, and we just can’t imagine how the family is processing all this,” he stated, characterizing the situation as “unbelievably absurd.”
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department announced no in-person press conference would occur late Friday, though officials pledged to issue a written statement.
Federal and local investigators have been conducting house-to-house inquiries in Guthrie’s neighborhood and in the area where her daughter, Annie, lives, the location where Guthrie had dinner shortly before vanishing.
A team of pool maintenance workers accessed Guthrie’s property Friday under deputy supervision. Otherwise, activity at the residence had diminished compared to previous days of the investigation.
The sender initially requested one Bitcoin, valued around $65,000, but increased the demand to align with the FBI’s doubled reward of $100,000. In the most recent message, the individual suggested an upfront payment of $50,000 in Bitcoin in exchange for “the name of the main individual along with his information for you to track,” as per the email.
