Gayle King‘s outing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final sparked some interesting online comments.
“Earlier this week, a publication listed me as the ‘Worst Dressed of the World Cup,'” King shared on the Tuesday, July 21, episode of CBS Mornings. “Now, not only was I on this list, they said I led this list wearing a ‘frumpy white outfit,’ specifically, that I wore a ‘tight, white tank top’ — that was Boston Proper — ‘paired with some wrinkled white sweatpants’ — that was Alice + Olivia, which, by the way, my favorite son, Will, ironed for me. He said the pockets were a little dicey because I don’t know how to iron.”
King said the publication described her complete look as “boring and dowdy,” and that she was joined on the worst dressed list by celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, Blake Lively, and Winnie Harlow. “I think all these women look so great, and since they’ve made best dressed lists in the past, I think I’m in very good company,” she stated. “But I just think this was hilarious.”
King went on to remark, “I didn’t realize, Norah [O’Donnell], that the World Cup had become such a fashion show.” O’Donnell complimented King’s World Cup outfit, stating, “First of all, I thought you looked very good in that tank top, Gayle.”
King went on to ask CBS Mornings‘ “resident fashionista,” Nate Burleson, for his thoughts on her look. “So, what was wrong with my outfit?” she questioned, to which Burleson replied, “I don’t think anything was wrong, ’cause it was in theme with how everybody was dressed. You guys went with the lighter tones, all-white. I thought it was good. And it was comfortable. You’re at a soccer match.”

King wrapped up the fashion discussion by stating, “I really didn’t get it, not that I’m sensitive or anything about it.”
Fans shared their reactions to King’s outfit criticism via Instagram, with one person writing, “It was super hot in the stadium. I think your outfit was a cool choice. You look great being you!” Another said, “I think Gayle looked cool & appropriate for a soccer match.” Tina Knowles shut down the critics by commenting, “Please!!! They just want something to say!!!!”

Favorite son @willgb3 and favorite daughter-in-law, the lovely @elisemariesmith, came to New York just for @jayz last weekend—and lucky for them, they got to stay for the World Cup Final!” she captioned the Monday, July 20, upload. “It was my very first soccer match, and special thanks to @f3cooper at @visa for inviting us to their suite and giving us access to such a unique behind-the-scenes experience!”
She continued, “It may have been my first match, but it definitely won’t be my last. Will and Elise have been going to soccer matches for years, and now @ninawcooper and I finally see what all the fuss is about. World Cup 2026: unity, joy, and lots of love.” (Spain beat Argentina with a score of 1-0 during the Sunday, July 19 match.)
