Working as a royal, the Duchess of Sussex had a deep commitment to advancing mental health awareness, championing women’s rights and uniting communities.
Long before marrying Prince Harry, Meghan was acknowledged for her philanthropic spirit, taking on significant roles including World Vision ambassador in 2016 and supporting women in Mumbai’s impoverished areas to launch their own businesses through the Myna Mahila Foundation. The Duke of Sussex has supported his fair share of charities and recently spoke about mental health in New York.
Given Meghan’s extensive dedication to charitable causes, many were caught off guard when she stepped back from rroyal responsibilities so swiftly.
Princess Diana’s biographer, Andrew Morton, previously shared with The Mirror’s podcast, Pod Save the King, his perspective on Meghan and why she could have been a “natural royal” if she had stayed longer.
Expressing his opinion, Andrew stated, “The great tragedy, I think, is that Meghan and Harry didn’t give it long enough to see whether they could give it a go. They were on the out almost before the wedding music had finished.”
Considering Meghan’s activist background, he continued, “Meghan is a natural, I’ve got pictures of her when she was age 10 leading a march against the first Gulf War at her school. The local TV cameras turned up and she was there giving interviews.”
Andrew expressed his disappointment, stating, “She spoke at the United Nations with Hillary Clinton. She had the great possibility of using her talent and her position to make a genuine change to the world. I don’t think she’s going to make such a change living in Montecito.”
The author also drew comparisons between Harry’s appeal and that of his late mother, Diana, notinghow the Duke of Sussex “is a natural.”

Andrew added, “People do respond to them in a very positive way when they meet him. There is obviously a lot of negativity surrounding their behavior and their policies but Harry has always been someone who connects.”
He also praised Diana’s impact on the royal family, saying she represented a turning point in the way royals behaved.
He concluded, “So it wasn’t big handbags, white gloves and standoffish. It was more touchy-feely than it had ever been in the past. So she made the royal family more relevant to modern times.”
Earlier this week, Meghan and Harry made a rare joint appearance at a high-profile charity event where they were honored as Humanitarians of the Year. Meghan was also recognized as “a mother, wife, entrepreneur, and philanthropist” at the ceremony.
In addition, the Duke’s work with mental health organizations and his controversial tell-all memoir Spare were highlighted as part of his accomplishments.
However, the couple faced criticism for overshadowing Kate Middleton, as their speech at the event reportedly clashed awkwardly with one of Kate’s initiatives. Just hours earlier, she had passionately addressed the same issue in a personal essay, discussing the “epidemic of disconnection,” cautioning others about the risks of screen time and its potential effects on child development.
