King Charles went through a very public divorce with Princess Diana, something that’s believed to have greatly impacted their sons Prince Harry and Prince William.
Charles, 76, married Diana on July 29, 1981. Their relationship was anything but smooth, however, with Charles having an affair with the now-Queen Camilla and Diana beginning a relationship with James Hewitt.
The pair split in December 1992 before finalizing their divorce in August 1996. Royal author Tina Brown has opened up about Harry and William’s reactions to the split, suggesting they were both “heartbroken.”
Writing in her book, The Palace Papers, Tina shared William’s response, claiming he said,”I hope you will both be happier now.”
Tina suggested the Prince of Wales made the comments “with heartbreaking maturity, after both boys had shed their tears.”
Following his split from Diana, Charles sat down for a TV interview with broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby, confessing to having an affair with Camilla and claiming his marriage had “irretrievably broken down.”
The monarch also claimed his father, Prince Philip, had forced him to marry Diana, despite the relationship being loveless. Charles’ revelation allegedly affected William and Harry the hardest.
“They were heartsick at their father’s admission…that he had been forced into marriage to Diana by Prince Philip, and that he had been unfaithful to Diana with Camilla,” Tina wrote in her book.
Harry and William faced a “deluge of dirty laundry” as their parents navigated their divorce, which the princes attempted to avoid, according to Tina.
The public nature of Charles and Diana’s divorce seemed to impact William the most, with the author writing, “The Queen told a palace source that she was worried [Prince William] was going to have a breakdown. His housemaster was worried too.”
Charles wasn’t the only one who gave a shocking TV interview. In 1995, Diana hit back by sitting down with BBC Panorama.
During the chat, she opened up about the breakdown of her marriage, delivering the famous line, “There were three of us in the marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
When the interview was first broadcast, it was watched by 23 million viewers.
After Diana’s interview, Queen Elizabeth is believed to have urged the warring royals to make their split official by divorcing. Just one year later, Diana tragically died in a car crash in Paris, France, at the age of 36.
