Key Points

  • Richard Gere’s son Homer Gere recently starred in four episodes of Euphoria season 3.

  • The young actor will next appear in FX’s The Shards, which premieres Aug. 5.

  • Richard has publicly given his son his blessing to continue acting if he wants to: “I can retire now. I’m passing the torch.”

Euphoria season 3 may be over, but Homer Gere’s time on the small screen has just begun.

The actor, who is the son of Richard Gere and Carey Lowell, will star in The Shards, which will premiere on Aug. 5 on FX and Hulu. Gere will portray Robert Mallory, described in a press release as “a mysterious and magnetic new student” who arrives at the central prep school.

The Shards revolves around a group of privileged teens in 1980s Los Angeles as they come of age while a serial killer dubbed “The Trawler” terrorizes the city. The show also stars Igby Rigney, Kaia Gerber, Hayes Warner, and Graham Campbell as the central group of high schoolers, as well as Evan Rachel Wood, Wes Bentley, and Jordan Roth as a few of the adults in their orbit.

The show is based on the 2023 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis, the author behind American Psycho and Less Than Zero. Ellis serves as an executive producer on the show alongside Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson, Nissa Diederich, Tanase Popa, Nick Hall, Michael Uppendahl, Max Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, and Brian Young.

After appearing in a handful of short films, Gere made his TV debut in season 3 of Euphoria. He appeared in four episodes of the buzzy teen drama as Dylan Reid, an actor who stars on the fictional TV series L.A. Nights and eventually has a romantic entanglement with Cassie (Sydney Sweeney).

Gere’s father, Richard, recently praised his talents in an interview with PEOPLE.

“I’m proud of him on two levels,” the American Gigolo star told the outlet. “One, he’s really good. He really kind of preternaturally knows what he’s doing. But he’s also handling it really well. He’s a good kid. He’s a really good young man who kind of gets it, and this is not an easy job. Not everyone can function within it. So I think he can stay.”

The Chicago star noted that his son has the freedom to do whatever he wants. “I don’t think he’s got to make a life choice to commit to this if he’s doing this now,” Richard said. “He’s good at it and he’s having fun, but he can become a rock climber if he wants to do that.”

The Pretty Woman actor added that he has yet to see all of his son’s Euphoria scenes.

“I still need to see his second episode of Euphoria, but he has this big thing coming up with Ryan Murphy, and he just finished shooting a film with Oliver Stone,” he said. “So I can retire now. I’m passing the torch.”

The Stone project in question is White Lies, the filmmaker’s first narrative feature in a decade. Variety reported on Wednesday that Gere, Willem Dafoe, Ellen Barkin, and Michael Douglas — who memorably collaborated with the director on Wall Street — have all joined the cast.
