Hilaria Baldwin candidly spoke about her 26-year age gap relationship with Alex Baldwin.
The 41-year-old businesswoman appeared on the Uncut and Uncensored with Caroline Stanbury podcast on Wednesday, November 12. Hilaria discussed her marriage to the 67-year-old actor in terms of their significant age gap. The two tied the knot in 2012 and share seven children: daughters, Carmen Gabriela, 12, María Lucía Victoria, 4, and Ilaria Catalina Irena, 2, as well as four sons, Rafael Thomas, 10, Leonardo Ángel Charles, 9, Romeo Alejandro David, 7, and Eduardo “Edu” Pao Lucas, 5.
“I don’t believe that age is just a number, at least in our situation,” Hilaria said. “I think that there are certain things where I have to look at him and say he has 26 more years of experience. And sometimes that’s a flex, and sometimes that means that we need to do a little therapy.”
She further spoke about how the one thing she has learned in her relationship with Alex is that “you can’t please everybody.” Hilaria continued to say “that is a big lesson” for her and how it’s important to know “what you want” when you enter your 40s ,as she has done.
“That’s a beautiful thing, you know, for your relationship … you know what you want, and there’s probably a confidence that you have now that is extremely sexy and extremely just comforting,” the former yoga instructor said. “Whereas the ups and the downs and the insecurities that we often have when we’re younger and not knowing ourselves.”
Hilaria also spoke on Alec’s previous marriage to actress Kim Basinger, 71, and how it affected his actions with their children. The former couple were married from 1993 to 2002 and share one daughter, Ireland Baldwin, 30. Kim and Alec are cordial now, but during their divorce, it was considered tumultuous, and the pair had a bitter custody battle over Ireland for a time.
“He had the very notorious, complicated situation with his previous wife and with Ireland,” she explained. “I think he wanted a chance to do it in a different way and make different choices.”
Hilaria shared that their big family of seven kids was “very well thought out.” She also admitted how there are “hard moments” in her relationship with Alec.
“Do we have our normal marital arguments? One hundred percent,” she shared. “But it’s the desire to both want to be there and to both want to make it work. When you have that, I think you can go through anything together.”
Hilaria confessed that being married to the 30 Rock star has resulted in a partial loss of her identity.
“I think in many ways, I did lose part of my identity when I married Alec,” the season 34 Dancing with the Stars alum explained, before going into the pressure of “other people talking about me for the first time on a very massive level.”
“I posted this on my [Instagram] Stories, this woman said, ‘You need to be able to really articulate and know what your identity is, because otherwise you’re going to just get it from other people because everybody’s going to have an opinion,’” she recounted.
