Hollywood bombshell Veronica Lake’s smoldering appearance, signature peek-a-boo hairstyle, and alluring voice catapulted her to stardom in the 1940s.

Born in 1922, she became a recognized name across America before reaching 20, following her breakout performance in the blockbuster film Wanted Wings in 1941.

Marketing materials and promotional clips alone earned her the title “the find of 1941”. Yet, merely two decades afterward, a newspaper would expose her working as a server in a Manhattan cocktail bar.

This represented a dramatic downfall for the actress, who was celebrated for portraying dangerous women in crime dramas like This Gun For Hire and The Glass Key alongside legendary actor Alan Ladd throughout the 1940s.

She permanently secured her position in entertainment folklore with her starring performance in the 1942 movie I Married a Witch, which served as inspiration for the cherished 1960s television series Bewitched.

Later that same year, the pair declared bankruptcy. She abandoned him, commandeering the aircraft and piloting solo to New York.

Their marriage ended in divorce in 1952. Looking back years later, she remembered: “They said, ‘She’ll be back in a couple of months. Well, I never returned. Enough was enough already. Did I want to be one of the walking dead or a real person?”.

In 1955, she wed her third spouse, Joseph Allan McCarthy, but their union would crumble four years later, sparking further deterioration as she wandered between rundown hotels. Already a chronic drinker, she faced multiple arrests for public intoxication and disruptive behavior.

In 1962, a reporter from the New York Post uncovered that she was residing at the all-women’s Martha Washington Hotel in Manhattan. Going by the alias Connie de Toth, combining her actual first name with her surname from her second marriage, she was earning money as a server in the downstairs cocktail lounge.

When the article was published, it was commonly assumed she was penniless, prompting admirers to mail her cash. Fiercely rejecting claims she was broke, she sent it all back as “a matter of pride” insisting she accepted the position partly because “I like people. I like to talk to them”.

“It’s as though people were making me out to be down-and-out. I wasn’t. I was paying $190 a month rent then, and that’s a long way from being broke,” she said. One positive outcome of the story was a resurgence of interest in the declining star, leading her to secure several television and stage bookings.

She created Footsteps in the Snow, her sole film of that decade, in 1966. In 1969, she published her frank autobiography, Veronica: The Autobiography of Veronica Lake.

The book explored her career, her unsuccessful marriages, affairs with Howard Hughes, Tommy Manville and Aristotle Onassis, her battle with alcoholism, and her remorse over neglecting time with her children. “I never did cheesecake like Ann Sheridan or Betty Grable. I just used my hair,” she joked.

She also dismissed the label “sex symbol” by calling herself a “sex zombie”.

She utilized the proceeds from the book to finance her final film, Flesh Feast, which debuted in 1970, but it proved to be a disaster. Three years later, in June 1973, she consulted a local physician while traveling in Vermont, reporting abdominal pain.

She was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis resulting from her years of alcohol abuse.

She passed away on July 7, 1973, from acute hepatitis and acute kidney failure. Her son, Michael, retrieved her body, and her memorial service took place at the Universal Chapel in New York City on July 11.

She was cremated; however, her remains went unclaimed for years due to outstanding funeral costs. Eventually, according to her final wishes, her ashes were dispersed off the Virgin Islands coastline.

In a further heartbreaking development in 2004, some of her ashes were allegedly discovered in a New York antique shop.
