Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has officially turned 86 and to celebrate it, the queen posed at the gates of Fredensborg Palace with her sister Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, son King Frederick, and daughter-in-law Queen Mary. The former monarch’s dachshund Tillia was also present and posed as a member of the family for the occasion.
The foursome and their furry friend went out to greet the citizens who had gathered in front of the palace to congratulate Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and to enjoy the concert performed in her honor by the band of the Royal Guard during the relay. Margaret and Anne-Marie listened to the concert seated on two chairs prepared for the occasion, while Frederick and Mary remained standing. Queen Margrethe’s pet has starred in some of the most tender moments, receiving the caresses of both her and Queen Mary.
It is the first time the public has seen Queen Mary since the death of her father, John Dalgleish Donaldson, who died last weekend in his home of Hobart, Tasmania at age 84. The Queen of Denmark is still in mourning, something that can be seen both in her countenance, somewhat more serious than usual, and in her choice of outfit: a navy blue jacket and trouser suit, with a matching chiffon blouse and turtleneck.
The Queen had the opportunity to visit her father at the end of March, taking advantage of her official trip to Australia, where she also visited her sister. Donaldson, who was a professor of applied mathematics, had seen his health deteriorate in recent years.
“My heart is heavy, and my thoughts are grey. My beloved father has passed away. But I know that when the grief settles, the memories will brighten my day, and what will remain strongest is love and gratitude for everything he gave me and taught me,” Queen Mary wrote in the statement announcing that the family would hold a private funeral at a later date.
As one life ends, another is celebrated with Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.
