Police are sharing distressing new details about influencer Ashlee Jenae’s death in April.
On April 9, the 31-year-old content creator — whose legal name was Ashly Robinson — was pronounced dead at a hospital on the island of Zanzibar in Tanzania. Robinson, whose death was later ruled a suicide by the Zanzibar Police Force, was on a trip to the island with her fiancé, Joe McCann, when she was found lifeless in her villa and rushed to the hospital.
In a press conference on June 4 — video of which was shared and translated by Tanzanian news outlet The Chanzo — Assistant Director of Criminal Investigation Zuberi Chembera said that, as part of the police investigation into her death, investigators allegedly found that Robsinson asked the AI chatbot ChatGPT a question that displayed “suicidal intent” the month before her death.
“The question asked was as follows,” Chembera told reporters. “ ‘How much Valium would kill me?,’ meaning how many tablets would she need to take to end her life.”
A spokesperson for OpenAI did not immediately return PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Chembera also said that investigators found “farewell messages” on her phone and others that “clearly confirmed” that Robinson had “a problem with depression.”
On Instagram, where she had over 88,000 followers, Robinson shared a range of lifestyle content. The content creator, who was based in Portland, Ore., also frequently shared snaps with McCann, including their date nights and vacations.
Hours after Robinson’s cause of death was publicly shared by authorities on June 4, McCann — to whom Robinson had gotten engaged days before her death — shared a lengthy statement acknowledging that she had died by suicide and added that it “does not lessen the tragedy of her death.”
“I miss Ashly every moment of every day and the pain of being without her will never go away. A sudden loss of this magnitude is not something I can simply get over,” he wrote. “My priorities all along were getting Ashly home and cooperating with the authorities to ensure that the truth would be revealed. I wish to express my deepest gratitude to the dedicated men and women of the Tanzania Police Force for their professional, sensitive, and thorough investigation.”
The case initially garnered international interest after police said that they were questioning McCann and had temporarily withheld his travel documentation as the investigation into her death continued, though he was never accused of wrongdoing.

On May 5, McCann publicly addressed Robinson’s death for the first time in a statement shared on X, reflecting on his grief as he remembered his relationship with the late internet personality.
“There are no adequate words to describe the total devastation, emptiness, and shock I feel after losing my best friend, confidante and fiancé, Ashly Jenae Robinson,” he opened the message. “As a father myself, I am also heartbroken for Ashly’s parents, Yolanda Endres and Harry Robinson.”
McCann continued: “Devoted fans knew Ashly through her charismatic online persona Ashlee, but the person I loved was Ashly, a woman who embodied the virtues of compassion, empathy, kindness, generosity, and love. A nurturing presence, Ashly cared deeply for the people closest to her, which to my eternal gratitude included me. She fattened me up with her amazing cooking and had a great relationship with my kids. Each day, we shared both quiet moments of reflection and the many joys of being in love with each other.”
