Reggaeton artist Lenny Tavárez used his red carpet moment at the MTV Video Music Awards to patriotically call attention to U.S. immigration policies.
Speaking to Daily Express US, Tavárez revealed that his outfit, titled “Unbroken Chains,” was created in collaboration with Mexican designer Manuel Ficareno, who was deported during the making of it.
“I always write to send a message,” Tavárez said, alongside a long list of winners.
“The message today is no. I’m very aware of the immigrants deportations that we are having right now in the United States. I have a lot of friends and family that are suffering because of that.”
Ficareno, according to Tavárez, was forced to leave the U.S. about a week before the awards, interrupting the final stages of designing the outfit.
Reflecting on his friendship with J Balvin, he said, “He’s, one of my friends, he, he’s incredible.”
“He’s just, you have a great, great energy, the vibe with me he’s he’s incredible,” adding, “He’s very intelligent, so I’m learning from him.”
When asked about his favorite music videos, Tavárez kept it simple: “If the video is a dancing video, I probably like it.”
