CHELSEA, MI — A Chelsea business is partnering with actor Jeff Daniels to bring a music venue and restaurant to South Main Street.
JD’s Stage Bistro, envisioned for 20 years, is under construction at 117 ½ S. Main Street, the Tannin Property Group announced this week. It will seat 100 and feature a wood-fired pizza oven, cocktail bar, patio and private event spaces.
The owners anticipate the restaurant and venue will open in the spring.
Chelsea native Daniels, along with his son, Ben, and wife, Amanda, joined the project to “help create a world-class music venue that would attract local, regional, and nationally recognized singer-songwriters, while setting a new standard for sound quality,” reads the announcement.
Chef Nate Wegryn, formerly of Echelon Kitchen in Ann Arbor and The Dixboro Project, northeast of Ann Arbor, will present an “inspired contemporary menu” and work with local farmers and suppliers, the owners announced.
The Chelsea-based Tannin Property Group, owned by Sandra and Aaron Vermeulen, Nathaniel Stanton and Roy Farmer, has done a lot of work in the city.
The group renovated the former Hallmark Store at 115 S. Main St. into mixed-use commercial and residential space, and restored what was the Flintoft law offices for what is now Serendipity Bookstore, 119 S. Main St. Their tenants also include Chelsea Bakery, 117 S. Main St., and a construction office in the former Chelsea Alehouse, which announced its closure last year. That space is to be remodeled and soon available, according to the property group.
Acoustics are at the forefront of JD’s design. “Acoustic treatments, structural reinforcements, and sound-absorbing materials are being incorporated to ensure performances enhance downtown without disrupting nearby residents and businesses,” the statement says.
JD’s Stage Bistro will complement the Purple Rose Theatre, “providing a nighttime economy to enrich and complement Chelsea’s standing as a destination for arts and cultural entertainment,” reads the announcement.
Daniels founded the Chelsea theater at 137 Park St. in 1991. It is just a tenth of a mile east of the new restaurant.
The JD’s owners “look forward to welcoming the community into a space built with care, creativity, and a deep respect for Chelsea’s past and future,” reads the statement.
