It’s the season of the sweatpants, and who says you can’t still try to make a fashion statement with the slouchy loungewear? Just look at Jennifer Lawrence. During a recent street style sighting in New York City earlier this month, the Oscar-winning actor proved that even the most casual of garments can be elevated with clever styling and high-fashion accessories.
Lawrence beat the below-freezing temperatures in a long dark-gray wool coat by the Row, which she sensibly layered over a Patagonia puffer zip-up jacket with a hoodie and a white T-shirt. Other notable winter gear included classic caramel Ugg booties, a leopard-print shearling bucket hat from Loewe, and white leather gloves. For a pop of color, Lawrence slung a yellow crossbody bag with an asymmetrical silhouette from Hermès.
But the underrated centerpiece of this mom-off-duty outfit was Lawrence’s choice of bottoms: a bright red pair of sweatpants from FreeCity. The small Hollywood-based brand has developed a celebrity cult following for its luxurious loungewear. Dakota Johnson has recently been photographed wearing the sweats, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (Lawrence’s style muses) even sell them at their the Row Hamptons location.
The 100 percent cotton sweatpants, which retail for under $200, come in a variety of colors, from the cherry-red iteration Lawrence wore to shades in cotton-candy pink, baby blue, and olive green—and if-you-kn0w-you-know staple, for a reasonable price.
Lawrence recently opened up about her no-fuss approach to off-duty style in an interview on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast. “I do a lot of closet clean outs,” the actor said. “I think living in New York helps with that. I don’t have a lot of excess stuff that confuses me.”
