King Charles and Queen Camilla’s U.S. state visit is off to a nice start with the royal couple treated to a lavish garden party on Monday.
Following a stop at the White House for tea with Donald Trump and Melania, in which the first lady showed off her beehives, the Trumps accompanied the King and Queen to the British Ambassador’s residence for quite the affair.
The event followed a royal tradition first established at the residence in 1939 for King George VI, Charles’ grandfather, the father of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
In addition to the 3,000 sandwiches prepared for the event, guests were treated to a viewing of an America 250 time capsule, which is the twin of a capsules already buried in Trafalgar Square,
Charles and Camilla jointly made contributions, including a specially minted commemorative coin from the Royal Mint and a signed proclamation from the king.
U.S. has pulled out all the stops for state visit
The start of the state visit comes two days after a shootings in D.C., in which Trump was the target, but according to royal expert Pauline Maclaran, this wasn’t going to stop the royals from carrying out their duties.
The state visit had been in the works for months with Maclaran saying: “I guess they are demonstrating the British ‘stiff upper lip!’”
“I think to back out at this stage would be very difficult and risk offence despite the recent shooting,” she added.
Maclaran, co-author of Royal Fever and Professor at Royal Holloway, explains what the state visit means for the British Royal Family: “I think it reinforces the Monarchy’s determined nature and its unflappability when faced with adverse circumstances, the well-known quote ‘keep calm and carry on.’”
And while security has been heightened for safety issues, it won’t damper the visit, according to the royal expert.
“I think the visit will still provide a public spectacle of grandeur even if heightened security and this is what engages many people.”
