Motörhead fans got a heartfelt and hard-rocking look inside Mikkey Dee’s world during his recent appearance on Talkin’ Rock with Meltdown. The legendary drummer opened up about his years with Lemmy Kilmister, his new band Lex Legion, and life on the road with Scorpions during an honest and energetic conversation with host Meltdown.
Looking back on his 25 years with Motörhead, Dee spoke with deep admiration for Lemmy and the unique chemistry that made the band unstoppable. He explained that Motörhead worked like a true democracy, even if Lemmy could be stubborn about protecting the band’s identity.
“Lemmy really stuck to his guns,” Dee said, recalling how the band sometimes voted against Lemmy’s ideas when they felt Motörhead needed a more modern edge. But he also admitted Lemmy often proved right when it came to avoiding compromise and “selling out.”
Dee painted Lemmy as the exact opposite of a typical rock star. Despite the larger-than-life reputation, he said Lemmy always stood up for the band instead of chasing the spotlight for himself. Dee remembered how Lemmy defended him when skeptical UK fans questioned the drummer’s arrival in Motörhead after his time with King Diamond.
“He was the least rock star,” Dee said. “That made him so unique.”
Keeping Things Neutral
One of the most revealing moments came when Dee explained how Lemmy insisted everyone in Motörhead be treated as equals onstage.
“The first thing he said is that in Motörhead, all of us got to be front persons. It’s not me in the front — it’s all of us.”
Dee also shared excitement about Lex Legion, his new project with longtime friends and fellow Scandinavian metal veterans. He described the band as a return to the adventurous songwriting style he loved during his King Diamond years. The debut album drops June 12, and Dee promised fans aggressive riffs, wild arrangements, and one of the most intense screams he’s ever heard on record.
Meanwhile, Dee continues powering through packed crowds with Scorpions during their Las Vegas residency. He praised the Vegas shows as “fantastic fun,” noting the band sold out performances and even broke venue records during last year’s run.
For Motörhead fans, Dee’s appearance on Talkin’ Rock with Meltdown delivered exactly what you’d hope for — stories about brotherhood, loyalty, loud music, and the enduring spirit of Lemmy Kilmister.
