The union that represents a vast number of actors and other professionals in the entertainment and media industry has elected Sean Astin as its new president.
On Friday, SAG-AFTRA selected Astin, renowned for his roles in The Lord of the Rings, Stranger Things, and Rudy, to succeed Fran Drescher as president.
Astin is the son of the late Oscar-winning actress Patty Duke and John Astin, who starred in the 1960s television series The Addams Family.
Sean Astin triumphed over Chuck Slavin by a margin of 79% to 21% in the vote. Michelle Hurd was elected as secretary-treasurer.
His mother, Patty Duke, served as the president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1985 to 1988.
According to its website, SAG-AFTRA merges the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. The organization represents approximately 160,000 actors, announcers, broadcast journalists, dancers, DJs, program hosts, recording artists, and others..
Under Drescher’s leadership, the union navigated two strikes involving film and television actors and a separate one concerning video game and interactive media performers.
In a recent statement, Astin expressed his enthusiasm about his new role, saying, “Now is a time for optimism and creativity. I am thrilled that the members have allowed me to lead our storied organization out of this challenging moment and into a future defined by confidence, progress, and fierce advocacy.”

Astin has been increasingly involved in SAG-AFTRA politics over the past six years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
His involvement included serving on the union’s negotiating committee during the 2023 actor’s strike.
This experience will likely be beneficial as SAG-AFTRA is anticipated to commence new negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers in 2026.
Who is Sean Astin?
Sean Astin, son of the late Academy Award-winning actress Patty Duke, has been in the acting industry since childhood. He made his first appearance in the 1985 adventure film The Goonies.
He later achieved global recognition for his role as Samwise Gamgee in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, a role that solidified his reputation as a cherished character actor. More recently, he featured in Netflix’s popular series Stranger Things.
Sean has been happily married to his wife Christine Astin for over three decades. The actor was still a teenager when he proposed to the film producer.
The couple is blessed with three daughters. Their first child, Alexandra “Ali” Astin, was born on Nov. 27, 1996, followed by Elizabeth Astin on Aug. 6, 2002, and Isabella Astin on July 22, 2005.
All three daughters share their mother’s middle name, Louise.
