Veteran pop auteur Lykke Li has signed a new deal with Neon Gold Records via Futures Music Group and will release her sixth album — her first in four years — titled “The Afterparty” on May 8. It is preceded by a new single, “Lucky Again.” The full tracklist and tour dates — including dates with Robyn and Wolf Alice, and appearances at both Coachella weekends — appear below.
“I was twirling around in love addiction for all those albums,” she says. “Now I’m going into my existential era.” “The Afterparty,” which features an orchestra and many ambitious arrangements, features nine tracks but breezes by in a fast 24 minutes.
The album’s cover is characteristically memorable, featuring her face warped by translucent tights. “I find that we’re in an era where everyone is talking about, ‘My higher self,’” she says. “Fuck that. This is an album dealing with your lower self: your need for revenge, your shame, despair, all of it.”
Derek Davies, founder of Neon Gold, co-Founder and co-CEO of Futures Music Group, says, “Lykke Li’s debut album ‘Youth Novels’ arrived in early 2008 – eight months before we founded Neon Gold in the fall of that year – and was massively influential in informing the direction of the label’s early years. It was the record that made us fall in love with the maximalist melancholy of Scandinavian pop music, and indirectly led to us spending much of our twenties back and forth between NYC and Stockholm, bringing the debut releases of Swedish sensations like Tove Lo, Icona Pop, Winona Oak, Seinabo Sey, et. al into the world on Neon Gold.
“Lykke was the blueprint for the kind of idiosyncratic, visionary, left-of-center pop talents we built Neon Gold to amplify – from the aforementioned Scandinavian artists to other defining names of the early years of Neon Gold like Charli XCX, Marina & The Diamonds, Ellie Goulding, and Christine And The Queens – and it’s an honor to come full circle with one of our heroes as we announce Lykke’s forthcoming sixth (and finest, seriously) album arriving this spring on Neon Gold / Futures Music Group.”
